Boating, paddling, and water safety

The first checks for motors, life jackets, local launch rules, weather, and water conditions.

Field guide Last reviewed June 29, 2026

Water is not one kind of place. Ocean, bay, lake, reservoir, river, and delta trips come with different rules and conditions.

If there is a motor, start with the Boater Card and course rules. If there are people on board, start with life jackets and required gear.

The simple version is this: wear the life jacket, check the wind and water, and do not let a calm morning talk you out of checking the afternoon.

First moves

  1. 1

If the boat has a motor, check Boater Card rules before launch.

  2. 2

Check life-jacket and safety-gear rules for the vessel you are using.

  3. 3

Look up the launch, marina, or park page for closures, fees, mussel checks, and ramp conditions.

  4. 4

Check weather, wind, surf, tide, or river level for the exact water body.

Watch for

  1. 1

Kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and rafts still need safety gear.

  2. 2

Cold water can be dangerous even when the air feels warm.

  3. 3

Reservoir levels, ramps, freshwater mussel rules, and lake rules can change quickly.

  4. 4

A good morning forecast can turn into rough afternoon wind.
