Weather and Safety
Outdoor weather and hazard checks
A last-check guide for weather, smoke, fire, heat, surf, rivers, snow, roads, earthquakes, and the live sources to trust before you leave.
Weather is local here. The beach can be foggy, the valley can be too hot, the foothills can be smoky, the Sierra can need chains, and the desert can be windy on the same day.
Do not use one app as the whole answer. Match the source to the risk: National Weather Service for weather, AirNow for smoke, CAL FIRE for active fires, Caltrans for roads, and the land manager for closures.
The simple rule is to check the exact place, the exact road, and the exact time you plan to be outside. If one live source says no, take the hint.
First moves
- 1
Check the National Weather Service forecast and alerts for the exact place and elevation.
- 2
Check the hazard that matters for the trip: smoke, active fire, heat, surf, river, snow, wind, or road closures.
- 3
Check Caltrans for the drive and the land manager for closures, fire rules, parking, and local warnings.
- 4
For beaches and boating, check surf, rip current, marine, tide, and water conditions.
- 5
For canyons, rivers, deserts, and high country, have a turn-around plan before service disappears.
Watch for
- 1
Heat can turn a short desert walk into an emergency faster than it feels fair.
- 2
Smoke can make a beautiful viewpoint a bad plan, even when the fire is far away.
- 3
Roads to mountains, beaches, forests, and trailheads can close even when the destination page still looks open.
- 4
Surf, sneaker waves, rip currents, floodwater, and fast rivers can be dangerous before they look dramatic.
- 5
Earthquake fault-zone maps are not day-of warnings, but they matter for property, building, and planning decisions.
