Almanac note · Rules and licenses
Alameda business licenses can include district assessments
Alameda business license work is online, but the location can change the bill. Businesses in Business Improvement Areas may pay an added annual assessment, and that is handled as part of the business license application.
That detail matters around Alameda’s older commercial districts. The address can affect which local business group or assessment area applies; it is part of the local business map.
Alameda also tells new businesses to get and annually renew a city business license. If a business is opening in a space, changing a storefront, or working from home, planning or building questions may come up too.
Before applying, gather the business name, owner or entity, physical address, mailing address, business activity, start date, and whether the location is home-based or commercial. If the address sits in a business district, expect that assessment question to appear.
