California note
Bakersfield building permits depend on the city-limit line
Confirm whether the project is inside Bakersfield city limits before applying: city sites use the City Building Division, while unincorporated sites use Kern County.
First check the city-limit line. A site inside Bakersfield uses the City Building Division. Its counter is at 1715 Chester Avenue, and its number is 661-326-3720. A site in unincorporated Kern County uses Kern County Building Inspection.
The city map marks land as City of Bakersfield or Kern County. Use the job address or parcel to check the line. Call the office before filing if the site is close to the line or the map is not clear.
Anyone can check county permit status without signing in. You need an account to book an inspection, pay, or swap plan files. City jobs use the city’s own form and status page.
For a city form, have the job address, parcel number, owner, and scope of work. Add contractor or design professional details when they apply. File a separate form for each building or tenant space.
