California note
An FTB tax notice deserves a dated paper trail
Read the FTB notice first. Follow the exact date to respond or pay. If the amount looks wrong, use the protest, appeal, or contact path printed on the notice. Asking for a payment plan does not replace a dispute over the tax amount.
For a personal income tax balance, the online plan has general limits. You must owe $25,000 or less and be able to pay within 60 months. You must also have filed all required returns for the past 5 years. An approved plan has a $34 setup fee.
Some cases may need a different FTB contact. These include an existing plan, wage garnishment, bank levy, or certain collection orders. FTB may ask for financial details or file a lien.
FTB says review of a personal plan request can take up to 90 days. Keep paying what you can during the review because interest and penalties continue. Do not assume the request stops collection. Business plans have separate rules. These include a $50 setup fee and a term that is generally shorter at 12 months.
Keep the notice, tax year, returns, wage statements, payment records, account screenshots, and all confirmations together. Use the official number on the verified FTB page or notice. Get qualified tax help if a protest date or large balance is close.
