Keep a generator at least 20 feet from doors and windows
Put a portable generator outdoors at least 20 feet from doors and windows. Never run one inside a home or garage, even with doors or windows open. A porch, balcony, breezeway, carport, or shed can still let exhaust collect or drift indoors.
Carbon monoxide has no color, smell, or taste. Keep working battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas, and test them before outage season.
If an alarm sounds or anyone has a headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, or confusion, get everyone into fresh air and seek emergency medical care. Do not stay inside to hunt for the source.
