Rainy hillsides deserve a landslide map look
California Geological Survey landslide tools can help people understand where past landslides and deep-seated landslide susceptibility have been mapped.
In many parts of California, hillside questions get sharper after long rain, fire damage, road work, or a new crack in a slope. The California Geological Survey has landslide tools that give a better first look than guessing from a street name or a pretty view.
The landslide map shows mapped landslides and deep landslide risk areas. It is useful around canyon roads, coastal bluffs, foothill lots, mountain cabins, and homes where a slope sits behind the house or below the road.
Use the map as a clue, not as the final answer. It can show that an area deserves more care. It does not inspect a wall, driveway, drain, deck, or foundation. A permit office, engineer, geologist, road crew, or emergency office may need to answer the exact property question.
Look by address or map spot, then ask what changed recently. Heavy rain, blocked drains, burned slopes, cut banks, and new seepage can all matter. If something looks active on the ground, use local emergency or public works contacts instead of waiting for a map layer to tell the whole story.
