Clayton's town story starts with Joel Clayton in Diablo Valley

Clayton was laid out in 1857 by Joel Clayton as a small Diablo Valley center for nearby mining, ranching, farming, and local trade.

Clayton’s name points to one person, but the story reaches across a lot of ground. Joel Clayton was born in Derbyshire, England, came to the United States in 1837, and worked in several places before making his way to California in 1850.

By 1857, his travels brought him and his family to Diablo Valley. There, he founded and laid out the town of Clayton. His idea was practical: create a center for people working in nearby mining and agricultural areas.

Clayton first bought 40 acres in the Mitchell Canyon area, then grew his holdings over time. The town almost had another name, too. “Garibaldi” was an early idea, and a coin toss is part of the story of how “Clayton” won out.

That history still fits the place. Downtown Clayton feels small, but it sits at a useful edge: close to Mount Diablo, open space, old ranch country, and the larger Bay Area. The town began as a working foothill center, and that shape is still easy to see.

Where to see it

Main Street, The Grove, Clayton City Hall, and the Mount Diablo foothill edge.
