Sierra National Forest is Fresno County's climb into high country

Sierra National Forest stretches from the Central Sierra foothills toward high lakes, wilderness areas, mountain roads, trails, and water recreation.

Fresno CountySierra National ForestCentral Sierra

Sierra National Forest is where Fresno County starts climbing out of the valley and into the Central Sierra. A day can move from foothill heat toward pine forest, lakes, mountain roads, and higher country.

The forest spans about 1.3 million acres in Fresno, Madera, and Mariposa counties. It rises from about 900 feet to nearly 14,000 feet. That range is why the same forest can mean a picnic near Bass Lake, a drive toward Shaver or Huntington Lake, or a much bigger trail day.

This is a place to narrow the plan before you leave. The forest is large enough that “going to the Sierra” is not really one destination.

Review Forest Service conditions, road notices, fire rules, and the specific lake or trail area you want. A clear target makes the trip feel much easier.
