Vacant dirt inside Hesperia is not an open off-road riding area

Inside Hesperia, a dirt lot is not an open riding area. An off-road vehicle may not be ridden on a public street or public right-of-way. This includes a motorcycle, scooter, pocket bike, quad, and similar machine.

Private land is not an automatic yes. You need written permission from the owner. Carry that paper with you while you ride. Even then, stay at least 200 yards from any occupied home, church, school, office, clinic, or public gathering place. The same buffer applies to a barn, stable, or pasture where animals are kept.

The few exceptions cover real farm work, road or site work, government work, golf carts on a golf course, and a permitted race track or OHV park. A vacant lot is not an exception. Breaking the rule may lead to the city taking the OHV as a nuisance. A court can later order forfeiture.

For legal public riding, one choice is El Mirage, a BLM OHV area northwest of Hesperia. Each vehicle driven through the gate needs a pass. Current rates are $15 for a day, $30 for a week, and $90 for a season. A California-owned OHV needs current registration or a sticker. It also needs working brakes, a muffler, and a spark arrester. All ATV riders need a helmet. A rider under 14 needs adult supervision. The dry lake can close after rain, so check the BLM page or closure line before loading.
