Montague has a rail-town story under Mount Shasta

Montague began as a Shasta Valley rail hub, kept a redwood depot memory, and now adds color with its hot air balloon fair.

Montague sits in Shasta Valley. Mount Shasta is close enough to shape the whole feeling of the place. It is a small far-north city, but its story is bigger than its size. Railroads made it a regional connection point.

Early settlers were in the valley by the 1850s. The town of Montague was founded in 1887. Its name honors Samuel Skerry Montague, a Central Pacific Railroad engineer tied to major California rail work. When the Oregon and California Railroad was completed through the area, Montague became an important stop for travel and trade in northern Siskiyou County.

That mattered to nearby Yreka. Yreka was the county seat, but the main rail line passed through Montague instead. So Yreka residents built their own railroad connection to the Montague hub in 1888 and 1889. That line became the Yreka Western Railroad.

The depot helps make that history easier to picture. The Montague Railroad Depot was built in just five weeks in 1887, the same year the town was laid out. It was built of redwood, even down to the shingles. In 1976, it moved to its current spot. Today the depot museum opens for special events and tours, so checking ahead pays off.

Montague also has a lighter modern tradition. The Montague Hot Air Balloon Fair brings bright balloons into the Shasta Valley sky. The 2026 event is scheduled for September 18-20. That is a very different scene from cattle drives and rail freight, but it fits the same wide-open valley. Check the event schedule before making the drive, since weather and launch times matter.

Montague gathers several far-north California threads in one small place: railroad need, ranch-country travel, a redwood depot, Mount Shasta views, and a community event that turns the valley sky into the main attraction.
