BART and Tempo give Oakland a useful transit spine
Downtown BART and AC Transit Tempo connect Oakland trips, but Tempo uses its own stations, proof-of-payment rules, and fare.
Oakland’s 12th Street BART station and AC Transit’s Tempo Line 1T serve different parts of the same trip. Tempo runs between Uptown Oakland and San Leandro BART by way of 11th and 12th streets, International Boulevard, and East 14th Street. It also links with 19th Street, Fruitvale, and San Leandro BART.
Tempo runs around the clock, but its raised stations are not always where an older local bus stop used to be. Pay before boarding and keep proof of payment. As of July 1, 2026, the local fare is $2.75 with Clipper or contactless payment and $3 in cash. A paper ticket from a Tempo machine is valid for 90 minutes.
The 12th Street BART station has no public parking or restroom. A wheelchair rider must use one elevator between the street and concourse, then a different elevator between the concourse and platform. BikeLink lockers are available, but a locker is not the same as taking a bike on a crowded train.
Look up the exact Tempo station and BART platform before leaving. For a transfer, allow time to walk between systems and check both agencies for alerts; one service can be running normally while the other is delayed.
