In Oxnard, natural tsunami signs mean move without waiting
Oxnard tells people near the coast to move inland or uphill immediately after natural tsunami warning signs, without waiting for an official alert.
Before spending time near Oxnard’s coast or harbor, check whether the place is in a tsunami hazard zone. Find the nearest high ground and more than one route inland. The city’s current page includes a citywide evacuation map and smaller maps for coastal communities.
Natural warning signs require action before a phone message. If you are near the coast and feel an earthquake, see an unusual ocean change, or hear a loud ocean roar, move inland or uphill immediately. Oxnard says not to wait for an official alert.
Official alert levels still matter. A warning means dangerous coastal flooding and currents are possible, so move to high ground or farther inland. An advisory means stay out of the water and away from beaches and waterways. Register for VC Alert for local messages.
The first wave may not be the largest, and dangerous currents can continue for hours. Stay away until officials say the area is safe. The map gets you ready; the natural sign or live instruction tells you to move.
