Palm Desert puts art right into the everyday desert walk

Palm Desert is known as a Coachella Valley cultural and retail center, and its public art program puts sculpture and artwork into streets, parks, libraries, shopping areas, and civic spaces.

Palm Desert is easy to picture through shopping, golf, desert views, and El Paseo, but the public art layer is one of the best ways to slow the city down. The city has made art part of the everyday landscape, with permanent and developer artworks in places like parks, libraries, community centers, shopping centers, hotels, housing areas, and business plazas.

That did not happen by accident. Palm Desert adopted a public art ordinance in 1986, the first of its kind in Riverside County. The idea was simple enough to understand: as the city grew, new development should help add approved art or support the Art in Public Places fund.

The result is a desert city where the walk between errands, dinner, shops, civic buildings, and events can include sculpture and art without needing a museum ticket. El Paseo adds another visible layer through its sculpture exhibition in the median of the shopping district.

Palm Desert incorporated in 1973 and is often described as a cultural and retail center of the desert communities. The art program gives that identity a visible form. It makes the city feel carefully assembled, with desert light, shopping streets, civic spaces, and sculpture working together.
