Reedley's opera house rose from a downtown fire
The 1903 Reedley Opera House Complex grew out of a downtown fire and became a brick center for theater, commerce, meetings, and community life.
Reedley’s opera house has a comeback story built into its bricks. After a 1902 fire burned the main wooden blocks of downtown, local grain merchant Jesse Jansen helped rebuild in brick. The Opera House Complex went up in 1903.
The building carried a surprising amount of town life. It held a theater, bank, drug store, harness shop, town meetings, dances, church events, graduations, and boxing or wrestling exhibitions. One downtown corner could handle business, entertainment, worship, school pride, and a little spectacle.
Small details make the place feel handmade and local. The building used Reedley-made brick in several colors. It also had arched doors and windows, decorative metal finials, and a carbide generator in the basement from before electricity arrived in 1907.
The Opera House Complex was registered as a historic resource in 1984. For Reedley, it gives downtown a specific story instead of letting the old main street blur into the rest of the Valley.
