Old Sacramento keeps the riverfront story close to downtown
Old Sacramento State Historic Park preserves early commercial buildings, railroad history, and a riverfront district tied to the Gold Rush era.
Old Sacramento works because you can feel the river, rail, and old commercial streets in one walk. It is close to downtown, but it moves at a slower pace than the office blocks nearby.
The state historic park preserves early Gold Rush commercial structures. The district includes places tied to the Pony Express, the first transcontinental railroad, and the transcontinental telegraph. The 1849 Eagle Theater, 1853 B. F. Hastings Building, and 1855 Big Four Building are part of that larger story.
You do not have to turn the visit into a history class. Start with one anchor: the riverfront, the California State Railroad Museum area, a historic building, or a simple walk through the district.
Confirm hours, parking, museum details, and special programs before visiting. Old Sacramento is easiest when you know whether you are visiting for a stroll, a museum, or an event.
