San Leandro permit work is easier when the portal comes first
San Leandro uses an online permit portal for building permits, status checks, inspections, submittal guides, and permit-center routing.
For a San Leandro building permit, start in the Online Permit Portal. It handles the application, document uploads, fees, status checks, plan-review comments, issued permit papers, and inspection scheduling. An in-person appointment at the Permit Center is also available.
The online form has a small address quirk: enter only the street number first, then use Search so the rest can fill in. Upload the plans and forms as PDFs. After the application fee is paid, the city asks applicants to allow 3 to 5 business days for an initial quality check.
Plan review can take about 5 to 20 business days depending on the project. Approval is not permission to start work: the permit must be issued, final packaging must be complete, and the required fees must be paid. Inspections can be scheduled only after the record says Issued or Ready for Inspection.
Building permits, business licenses, planning permits, and encroachment permits do not all use the same lane. Before applying, write down what is changing, where it is, who will do the work, and whether any part reaches into the sidewalk or street.
