San Bruno Mountain gives San Mateo County a wild ridge in the city

San Bruno Mountain State and County Park has rugged open space, bay views, trails, picnic areas, rare plants, and butterfly habitat.

San Mateo CountySan Bruno MountainBay views

San Bruno Mountain can surprise you because it feels wild in the middle of so much city. It is an open-space island at the north end of the Santa Cruz Mountains, with the Bay Area wrapped around it.

The park has 2,416 acres of rugged land. The ridge rises from about 250 feet to 1,314 feet, and the trails can open views toward the Pacific Ocean, central Bay, and San Francisco skyline.

It is also a sensitive place. The mountain has rare and endangered plants, plus host and nectar plants for endangered butterflies. That is part of what makes the park feel different from a regular neighborhood hill.

Pick the kind of day first: a summit view, a hike, a picnic, or a slower nature stop. Check hours, trail rules, dog rules, and any current notices from San Mateo County Parks.
