Alvarado Adobe gives San Pablo an older California link

San PabloAlvarado AdobeRancho San Pablo

Alvarado Adobe gives San Pablo an older California layer right near City Hall. The museum is tied to Juan Bautista Alvarado. He served as governor of Mexican Alta California.

The older site goes back to 1842. Jesus Maria Castro built an adobe house, grape arbor, and gardens for Gabriela Berryessa de Castro. The land was tied to Rancho San Pablo. That is a long way back for a city many people now know through shopping centers, apartments, schools, and I-80 traffic.

The museum is small, but the story is not. It connects San Pablo to ranchos, Spanish and Mexican California, early Contra Costa County, and family names that still show up in local history.

Openings are announced through the city’s weekly eNews. Group tours can be scheduled. Check first, then treat it as a short visit with a much deeper timeline.
