The old courthouse shows why Santa Ana became a county center
The Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana began with county government needs in the 1890s and still anchors a historic civic story downtown.
Santa Ana’s downtown makes more sense when you know the courthouse story. In 1893, the young County of Orange bought land from William Spurgeon, Santa Ana’s founder, so it could build a permanent courthouse. The first building on the site was the jail in 1897, and the courthouse followed a few years later.
When the courthouse was dedicated in 1901, it gave early Orange County a civic center. Courts, county offices, records, public meetings, and everyday government all needed a home. As the county grew, other buildings took over many jobs, but the old courthouse stayed as a landmark.
That makes it a useful stop for understanding Santa Ana. The old building has pretty details, and it also shows why so many county errands, court pieces, archives, and public buildings still gather near downtown.
If you are already nearby, step back and picture the county when this was one of its most important public buildings. The scale of Orange County changed, but the old center is still readable.
