Villa Montalvo gives Saratoga art, gardens, and a California twist
Montalvo Arts Center ties Saratoga to a historic villa, public arts, wooded grounds, and the old story behind the name California.
Villa Montalvo gives Saratoga a place where the setting and the story both matter. The villa was built for James Duval Phelan. He had been mayor of San Francisco. He later became California’s first popularly elected U.S. senator.
The name has a neat California twist. Montalvo points back to Garci Ordonez de Montalvo. He was the 16th-century writer linked to an old story of California as a rich island ruled by Queen Califia. The griffin statues on the grounds carry that story in a quiet, visual way.
The place later became a public arts center. It has artists-in-residence, galleries, programs, gardens, and wooded paths. That keeps it from feeling like a frozen mansion. It feels like a living arts place in the foothills.
For Saratoga, Villa Montalvo adds a lot. It ties the city to art, Bay Area politics, garden design, old California mythology, and a public place where visitors can slow down a little.
