Castle Crags is a helpful Siskiyou County anchor because it is easy to picture: sharp granite spires, forested slopes, river access, and Mount Shasta in the larger scene. It also sits close enough to I-5 that many travelers pass near it without understanding what they are seeing.
The park can be a short stop or a harder hiking day, depending on the route. Some trails are easygoing. Others climb and ask more from the visitor. That range is part of the point.
