Stagecoach Inn gives Thousand Oaks an older road story

The Stagecoach Inn Museum in Newbury Park helps Thousand Oaks tell the Conejo Valley's older travel, hotel, school, ranch, and community story.

Thousand Oaks is often seen through open space, suburban streets, and the Santa Monica Mountains. Stagecoach Inn adds an older Conejo Valley road story. The original inn, first called the Grand Union Hotel, was built in 1876 near what is now Ventu Park Road and the Ventura Freeway.

That hotel was tied to travel between Southern California towns before the freeway age. Over time, the place served the growing community in different ways, and the museum now uses the site to share Conejo Valley history.

The museum is more than one building. Its grounds include exhibits and spaces such as the inn, a schoolhouse, carriage and blacksmith areas, a Chumash exhibit, garden spaces, and historical-trades events. It makes the valley feel older than the postwar city most people picture.

Check museum hours before going. The site is usually open on set days, and events can make a visit feel very different from a quiet afternoon walk through the exhibits.
