General Sherman can make Sequoia National Park feel much bigger than a map suggests. It is a way into Giant Forest. This is where the scale of the Sierra Nevada starts to feel real.

General Sherman stands at the north end of Giant Forest. It is known as the largest tree in the world by volume. The main trail runs about half a mile down to the tree. The path is paved, with a few stairs and exhibits along the way. The walk back is uphill.

For an easier visit, read the NPS page ahead of time. It explains accessible parking, shuttle options when available, and winter conditions. It also explains why visitors should stay on the paved trail to protect the tree’s shallow roots.
