Food help, CalFresh, and WIC check

A first-step check when food is needed now or you are applying for CalFresh or WIC.

Why it matters

Food needed today and food benefits for next month are two different problems. Local food help can be immediate. CalFresh and WIC each have their own application path.

Official first stop

Start here

Find the right public office for everyday paperwork.

First moves

  1. 1

If food is needed today, call 211 or use its local search. Ask about a pantry, meal site, senior meals, school meals, and the county office.

  2. 2

Submit a CalFresh application as soon as you are ready. Do not wait to gather every possible paper before starting the county process.

  3. 3

Ask the county to screen the application for expedited service if the household has little or no money. Eligible households have a right to expedited CalFresh within three days.

  4. 4

For the regular path, CDSS says the county must provide benefits or an eligibility notice within 30 days after the application is filed.

  5. 5

Complete the county interview and send the proof the county requests. Save the application date, interview notice, uploads, and confirmation numbers.

  6. 6

Gather household names, address, income, housing costs, utilities, child care, and medical costs if they apply. The county will tell you what proof it needs.

  7. 7

For WIC, contact a local WIC office for an appointment. WIC serves qualifying pregnant people, people after pregnancy, and children under age five.

  8. 8

For the WIC appointment, be ready with identity, address, household-income or program proof, pregnancy information, and the child if the office asks.

Watch for

  1. 1

A pantry or 211 referral does not file a CalFresh application. Use both paths when food is needed now.

  2. 2

Expedited service is not automatic approval for every applicant. Ask the county to screen the facts.

  3. 3

An interview is part of the CalFresh application process. A missed interview or missing proof can delay or stop the application.

  4. 4

WIC is not CalFresh. It has its own local office, nutrition appointment, card, and food list.

  5. 5

Parents, guardians, and grandparents can ask WIC about an eligible child under five. The local WIC office makes the official decision.

  6. 6

Student, senior, disability, mixed-household, and immigration rules can be detailed. Do not rely on a social-media eligibility chart.

  7. 7

A county Notice of Action generally gives 90 days to ask for a state hearing. Read the notice because acting before the change date can matter.
