DMV ID, REAL ID, and address-change check
A document check for a California license, ID card, REAL ID, replacement card, or move.
Why it matters
A DMV address update does not print a new card. REAL ID also needs a specific document set and an office visit.

First moves
- 1
Start with the task: first card, renewal, replacement, REAL ID upgrade, name update, or address change.
- 2
If you moved, notify DMV within 10 days. Update the driver license or ID record and each vehicle record that needs the new address.
- 3
Save the address-change confirmation. DMV does not automatically send a new license, ID card, title, or registration card after the update.
- 4
For REAL ID, use DMV's checklist before applying. Choose one accepted identity document and two different California residency documents.
- 5
Check that the current full name matches the identity document. Bring the marriage, adoption, divorce, or court papers needed to trace each name change.
- 6
Complete the online application and save the confirmation code. Bring the original or certified documents to the DMV field office.
- 7
For a lost, stolen, or damaged card, use the official replacement path. Destroy the old card if it turns up after the replacement arrives.
- 8
A standard California card can still be used for identity and age. It is not accepted for federal REAL ID purposes such as boarding a domestic flight.
Watch for
- 1
A USPS forwarding request does not update DMV. A DMV change does not update voter registration, Social Security, banks, or insurers automatically.
- 2
Changing an address does not issue a new card. A replacement card is a separate request and can have a fee.
- 3
A photocopy or hospital souvenir birth paper is not the same as the original or certified identity document DMV lists.
- 4
REAL ID requires two different residency documents. Both generally need the name and same California mailing address used on the application.
- 5
Uploading document images saves time but does not replace the field-office visit or the original-document check.
- 6
A person can hold only one REAL ID card, either a REAL ID license or a REAL ID identification card.
- 7
If a card was stolen with other personal information, use the identity-theft route in addition to replacing the card.
