Bakersfield smoke and air days need a local check

Valley Air's daily forecast covers all of Kern County, so Bakersfield residents should pair it with the nearest real-time monitor when smoke or dust is local.

Bakersfieldair qualitywildfire smoke

Valley Air publishes a daily Air Quality Index forecast for Kern County. That is the broad outlook for today and tomorrow. It is not a block-by-block reading for Bakersfield.

The district warns that local wildfire smoke, blowing dust, or another nearby air problem may differ from the county forecast. For the current reading nearest you, use its Real-time Air Advisory Network, or RAAN. During wildfire smoke, the district’s wildfire page also links the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.

Think of the tools in this order: forecast for the day, nearest monitor for the neighborhood, and official emergency messages for any immediate instruction. If you can smell smoke or see ash, Valley Air says that is already a sign poor air is affecting the area, even if the county forecast looked better.

Before outdoor work, school sports, or a long day outside, check the current AQI and follow the health guidance for that level. People with heart or lung conditions should also follow the plan they have from their medical professional.
