CalFresh applications run through the state and the county
A CalFresh application can be submitted right away; the county generally has 30 days to decide, or 3 days for eligible expedited service.
Apply as soon as food is running short. You can use BenefitsCal or apply through the county. You have the right to turn in the application that same day, even if you still need to give proof. The county generally must decide the case and issue benefits within 30 days.
Ask for faster service if the household has little or no money. This is called expedited service. If the household meets those rules, CalFresh benefits must be available within 3 days. The faster clock does not mean automatic approval. Complete the county interview and proof requests as soon as you can.
BenefitsCal is the online doorway. The county handles the interview, decision, notices, and later case work. Keep the submission confirmation, upload receipts, notice dates, and county contact in one place. If you disagree with the county’s action, use the hearing steps on the notice.
