A California private car sale is mostly paperwork before money
A California private vehicle sale goes smoother when the buyer and seller check title, smog, odometer, fees, plates, and the seller's release notice before the handoff.
Buying a used car from another person can feel casual, but the California paperwork is what keeps the deal from getting messy.
Before money changes hands, look at the title, the name on it, the VIN, the plate, the odometer space, and the signatures. If the title has a lienholder, a missing signature, or a name that does not match the seller, slow down and check DMV steps first.
Smog is another early question. Many California vehicle transfers need a smog certificate, but there are exceptions by vehicle type, age, and situation. Use DMV and BAR pages before assuming the buyer can fix it later.
The buyer handles the title transfer. The seller should also send DMV the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability after the sale. Those are related, but they are not the same chore.
For a smoother handoff, take a photo or copy of the signed papers, write down the sale date, keep a bill of sale if you use one, and make sure both sides know who is doing the next DMV step.
