Batiquitos Lagoon is a protected reserve, not a beach park

Batiquitos Lagoon is a 544-acre ecological reserve for wetland habitat. The public trail begins from Gabbiano Lane and works well for a walk or wildlife viewing. Public parking is very limited, so have a backup plan instead of parking where a sign or driveway blocks it.

This is not a bike path or an open shoreline playground. Bikes and horses are not allowed. Hunting is closed. A drone needs a special-use permit. Dogs must stay under their owner’s control. Keep to the public route and leave fenced or marshy edges alone.

Fishing is a narrow exception. With a valid California fishing license, the named reserve spots are the north side under Interstate 5 and the north and south sides under Carlsbad Boulevard. Fishing is not allowed east of Interstate 5.

A separate no-take state marine conservation area also covers lagoon waters. Do not cast from another bank just because it looks reachable. Check the current reserve page and marine-protected-area map before carrying fishing gear in. For a simple visit, use the Gabbiano Lane trail and treat the lagoon as habitat first.

Where to see it

Use the Gabbiano Lane trail access for a lagoon walk. Check the CDFW reserve and marine-protected-area maps before bringing fishing gear.
