Bidwell Mansion is now part of Chico's recovery story
Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park honors John and Annie Bidwell, but the park is closed after the December 2024 fire while State Parks works on what comes next.
Bidwell Mansion is one of Chico’s most important historic places, even while the site is closed. Before the December 2024 fire, the three-story, 26-room Victorian house helped tell the story of John and Annie Bidwell and early Chico.
John Bidwell was a pioneer, farmer, soldier, politician, and philanthropist. Annie Bidwell helped shape civic life and gave the city the first large land gift for Bidwell Park. The mansion mattered because it connected family history, city identity, parkland, and public memory.
For now, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park is fully closed after the fire. The visitor center and carriage house are in good condition but remain closed, and there is no reopening date listed.
For now, know why the site matters and check State Parks before planning a visit. Chico’s Bidwell story is still being cared for, just in a different stage.
