Almanac note · Rules and licenses

Chico business licenses can touch home or downtown rules

Chico businesses inside city limits need a current business license, and home-based or downtown businesses may have added planning or district steps.

Chicobusiness licensehome occupation

Chico business licenses reach beyond storefronts. Businesses doing transactions inside city limits need a current license, including businesses run from a home office.

The address still matters. Chico reminds business owners that the license does not replace building, parking, zoning, or fire safety rules. A home-based business may need a Home Occupation Permit review through Planning. A business inside the Downtown Parking and Business Improvement Area may have an added downtown tax application.

In Chico, a business owner should check the map and the activity along with the business name. A quiet home office, a downtown shop, a food business, a contractor, a parking-heavy use, or a tenant space can each raise a different question.

Before applying, gather the business name, address, owner contact, start date, home or commercial status, whether the location is downtown, and whether food, customers, employees, parking, signs, construction, or fire review might be involved. If the use or location is unusual, ask the building or planning question before you treat the license as finished.
