MercedNational Wildlife RefugePacific Flyway

Merced National Wildlife Refuge is a good Central Valley nature stop because you do not need a long hike to understand the place. The refuge has a five-mile auto tour route and several nature trails.

The refuge has more than 10,200 acres of wetlands, native grasslands, vernal pools, and riparian areas. In winter, it is known for lesser sandhill cranes and Ross’s geese along the Pacific Flyway.

The auto tour and trails are open daily year-round, but wildlife viewing changes by season. Summer heat can be serious, so review conditions and bring water.
