Rio Vista kept its river-view name after moving to higher ground

Rio Vista began near Cache Slough, later moved to higher ground, and grew into a Sacramento River Delta town with a bridge, fishing, and river traffic.

Rio Vista’s name means river view, and the name fits. The town sits in the Sacramento River Delta, where water, roads, wind, farming, fishing, and shipping all meet.

The first settlement was not exactly where the city is now. Colonel Nathan H. Davis founded Brazos del Rio in 1858 near Cache Slough and the Sacramento River. By the time high water arrived in 1862, the settlement had been renamed Rio Vista. After that, the town moved several miles south to higher ground.

That move shaped the city. Rio Vista kept its river identity but learned to live with Delta water on more careful terms. It incorporated in 1893, and the river stayed central to local life.

Today, the Rio Vista Bridge, downtown, marina area, museum, and nearby Delta waterways all point back to that story. The city also sits among more than 1,000 miles of waterways, which is why fishing, boating, and wind sports feel so natural here.
