Health coverage can branch between Covered California and Medi-Cal
Covered California and DHCS both point people toward health coverage, but the right route can depend on income, household details, timing, and county follow-up.
Health coverage questions often start with one form and then branch. Covered California is the state health insurance marketplace. Medi-Cal is California’s Medicaid program. DHCS gives several ways to apply: online, by phone, by mail, or through a county office.
Keep the household details close. That means income, address, household size, and any notice you already received. Immigration or citizenship papers may matter for some households. A small change in income or household members can change the next step.
Do not treat an estimate screen like a final decision. Save the confirmation. Watch for county or marketplace notices. Answer follow-up requests on time. If the question is urgent, use the official help path instead of waiting for a renewal deadline to pass.
