LA County property tax questions split between value and payment

Los Angeles County property tax questions usually split between the Assessor for value and ownership records, and the Treasurer and Tax Collector for bills and payments.

In LA County, a property tax question gets easier when you ask whether it is about value or payment.

The Assessor side is about the property record. That includes assessed value, ownership records, exemptions, and changes that can affect the value on the roll.

The Treasurer and Tax Collector side is about the bill. That includes property tax bills, payment options, due dates, delinquent taxes, refunds, and tax-defaulted property information.

This split matters after buying a home, getting a supplemental bill, changing a mailing address, checking an exemption, or trying to figure out why a bill looks different from last year. Calling the wrong office can feel like being sent in a circle.

Start with the bill or record in front of you. If the question is “Why this value?” begin with the Assessor. If the question is “How do I pay or fix this bill?” begin with the Treasurer and Tax Collector.
