Winter wood burning in the Valley gets a daily status

In the San Joaquin Valley, residential wood-burning rules can change by county and day during the winter Check Before You Burn season.

San Joaquin Valleywood smokeValley Air

The San Joaquin Valley has a winter wood-smoke rule that changes by county and day. From November 1 through the end of February, Valley Air issues a daily residential wood-burning curtailment status for each county.

If you use a fireplace, wood stove, pellet stove, or fire log, look up your county’s status first. The day’s status may allow burning, limit it to registered devices, or prohibit it. Exemptions can matter if wood is the only heat source or if there is no natural gas service, so use the program page for those details.

The local reason is easy to understand. Cold, still Valley air can hold smoke close to neighborhoods. The habit is small: look up the county status, use clean dry fuel only when allowed, and do not burn trash or paper materials.
